Rocquí Martis is a sailor from Bonaire and a fifth-generation seafarer. At the time of writing, he is 16 years old and already recognized as one of the island’s most promising young sailing talents. He began sailing at the age of nine, following a family tradition deeply rooted in the sea.
Sailing represents freedom, discipline, and focus for Rocquí. Competing in the Sunfish class, he has built strong technical and tactical skills through years of consistent training in the challenging waters around Bonaire. He trains three to four times per week, often in strong winds and currents that demand physical endurance, adaptability, and mental resilience.
Rocquí’s competitive objective is to represent Bonaire at the Sunfish International World Championships between 2025 and 2027, gaining international experience and competing against the world’s leading sailors. His long-term ambition is to reach peak performance in 2027, when the World Championships are scheduled to take place on Bonaire, offering him the opportunity to compete at the highest level on home waters.
Beyond competition, Rocquí is motivated by a strong sense of responsibility to his community. He aims to serve as a role model for young people on Bonaire, demonstrating that dedication, consistency, and belief can create opportunities beyond the island’s borders. Through sailing, he hopes to inspire others to pursue their goals with confidence and pride.
Supported by his family and the local community, Rocquí continues his development through structured training, fundraising initiatives, and sponsorships that help cover equipment, coaching, and international travel. His journey reflects not only personal ambition, but also a commitment to strengthening Bonaire’s presence in international sailing.
